Here are some things to think about as you prepare for a move. It may be helpful to print these moving tips for reference during your moving process.
- Summer is "peak" moving season. If you can be flexible about
when you move, don't wait until the summer. Also keep in mind that the first and
last weeks of the month are extra-busy for all movers.
- Specify the exact date you want to move and when it will
be convenient for an agent to visually survey your household and prepare an estimate.
- Tour your house before the agent arrives. Check from attic
to basement, and determine what will be moved and what will be discarded. Show
your agent everything you will be moving.
- If you plan to do the packing yourself, start collecting
suitable containers and packing materials right away
- Set packing goals and deadlines. Have all packing complete
by moving day.
- Take advantage of the online change-of-address services provided
by the USPS. It's easy and convenient, just visit the helpful links area of this
site.
- If you are being relocated at your company's request, find
out what portion of your moving expenses will be paid by the company. If your
company has a written moving policy, ask for a copy.
- Dispose of all flammables such as cleaning fluids, aerosol
cans, fireworks and matches. Drain the fuel from your power mower and other machinery.
Discard partly used containers of any substance that may leak. Empty the water
from your steam iron.
- Obtain a written appraisal of antique items to verify their
value. Don't wax or oil wood furniture before moving, because some products may
soften the wood, making it vulnerable to imprinting from furniture pads.
- Unplug all electronic equipment such as television sets,
home computers, stereos, etc., 24 hours in advance of a move so they will be at
room temperature on moving day. Moving a TV set and other electronic equipment
in which heat is still retained could cause internal damage.
- All dressers and chests can be left full with clothing. Remove
anything out that breaks or spills.
- Cushions from your couch, pillows, bedding, sweaters, etc.
should be put in heavy duty plastic bags.
- All two-drawer file cabinets and desks can be left full except
for the middle drawers in desks.
- Boxes should be marked as to which area of the house/apartment
they will be going to in your new home.
- Plants are not to be watered for at least two days prior
to your move.
- If you have hardwood floors at your new home, we recommend your buying felt pads, available at any hardware store, to apply to the feet of your furniture, particularly your largest, heaviest items. You can apply the pads to the furniture at your new home, before they are set in place.
- If you have light colored carpeting at your new home, we can provide carpet runners.
- If you have elevators in your building, remember to reserve them before we arrive. Complete access to the elevators will ensure an expedient and efficient move.
- If street parking is difficult and will restrict easy access for the movers, i.e. your residence in on a street car or Muni line, there is a bus stop in front of your building, the street is narrow or windy, etc., you will need to arrange for parking for the truck through your local police department. Each truck will need 35-40 feet
for parking and maneuvering. Additionally, when scheduling your move, please take into account parking restrictions, such as commute
time, tow away zones, and street cleaning schedules.
